BRITTANY FERRIES

Brittany Ferries

The official supplier to the ‘Route du Rhum - La Banque Postale’

Ever since the very first Route du Rhum, Brittany Ferries has been right there at the starting line, alongside the organizer, Michel Etevenon, and the city of Saint-Malo.

For this year event, Brittany Ferries has chosen to become an official supplier to the prestigious race and start will be given from our Admiral vessel ‘PONT AVEN’.

This means that in 2010 the company’s presence at the start of the race – which  will be taking place on 31th October in Saint-Malo, with three Brittany vessels attending : ‘PONT AVEN’ – ‘BRETAGNE’ – ‘NORMANDIE EXPRESS’ -  will be more effective than ever.

One year ago, the majority shareholders of Brittany Ferries, made up of farmers co-operatives, acquired a 50-foot trimaran and named her ‘PRINCE DE BRETAGNE’. Now they’ve decided to charter a ferry to follow at close quarters the departure of their sailing boat, which will be skippered by Lionel Lemonchois.

Brittany Ferries was born in 1972 and at that time it was considered by many to be an impossible endeavour. However, over its 37-year history the Company has imposed itself and managed to flourish in the challenging market of the Western and Central English Channel.

Brittany Ferries owes its success above all to its shareholders (70% of the shares are owned by farmers), who have shown incredible commitment and resolve, as well as to the know-how of its management, crew and staff. Credit must also be given to the Company’s regional partners who have ensured its stability over the years.

Brittany Ferries brings immense benefits to the French regions it serves - Brittany and Lower Normandy, as well as to the wider regions of Western France. These benefits include not only direct employment, but also the undeniable economic boom that comes with the steady flow of passengers and freight traffic.

Brittany Ferries today:

  • 9 ships sailing under the French flag
  • 8 routes: Plymouth/Roscoff & Santander - Poole/Cherbourg -  Portsmouth/Caen  & Cherbourg - St Malo/Santander, and Cork/Roscoff.
  • Brittany Ferries employs 2,500 people and is the biggest employer of French seafarers.
  • 2,500,000 passengers carried, as well as…
  • 800,000 vehicles and…
  • 200,000 freight vehicles
  • Since it started, Brittany Ferries has always tried to be different by offering far more than just a means of transport.

The Company is always trying to improve the quality of its on-board service as well as the wide range of holiday products it offers. Brittany Ferries sees itself as a holiday company, not merely a travel company and is the biggest French tour operator to Great Britain and Ireland.

Brittany Ferries believes its strength lies both in the quality and the diversity of services it offers.
